About Sullivan Fire Protection District

The Sullivan Fire District was formed in 1956. The District covered about one-hundred square miles, much of which was farm land. In September of 1970, Lake Shelbyville (which covers a large area of the ground we protect) we dedicated. The District covers two marinas, five campgrounds and two beaches in this government area. The Insurance Services Office recently improved the 9 rural rating and 5 city rating to a 7 rural and 5 city rating. These ratings are excellent for a community of our size. The Department has a combination department of nine paid and twenty-five volunteer firemen. The department's current rolling apparatus are; (1) 100 gpm Engines (2) 1500 gpm Engine, (1) 85' Snorkel, (1) Brush Truck, (1) Rescue Truck and (1) Boat. Our current pumping capabilities are 5,250 gpm.

Emergency Medical Services

In 1973, the Sullivan Fire District took over the ambulance service from a local funeral home. At conception, they had seven paid employees that were EMT-A certified. In 1979, Sullivan entered into a pilot project with Saint Mary's Hospital for a paramedic service. It has gone over very well and we now have nine fulltime paramedics. These paramedics are always striving to improve th service they provide and in 1995, we entered another pilot program of 12 lead EKG's in the field. The department has (2) modular ALS ambulances that are equpped for EKG's, IV's, Medications, and other ALS treatment. The department also has a new rescue truck equipped with (2) sets of jaws of life and many specialty tools for multiple types of rescue situations.

Education Programs - Prevention Through Teamwork

We are one member in a team of departments called the OKAW Fire Association. There are 13 departments that make up a strong team of protection and education. These departments provide mutual aid response to all in the organization, making this a strongly protected area. One of the fund raising projects is the Children's Safety Hourse. Several thousand children continue to go through the housing during OKAW sponsored Fire Prevention Programs.
