Lovington is a pleasant, small, rural community located in east
central Illinois. The Moultrie County community is bordered by an
Amish community (Arthur) to the east, the county seat (Sullivan)
and Shelbyville Lake to the south, and industry to the northwest.
Lovington was founded in 1850 and incorporated in 1873.
Today, the population of the community is a little more than 1100.
Services offered by the community include: An excellent volunteer fire department and ambulance service (certified volunteers), a new public library, a "meals-on-wheels" service for senior citizens, and beautiful Tom Conn Community Park. The Churches of the Lovington Area (COLA) serve the community individually and collectively. COLA sponsors the Community Thanksgiving Service, Holy Week Services, and other relief efforts. Lovington churches include First Baptist Church, First Christian Church, First Church of God, the Gospel Chapel, and the United Methodist Church. Lovington is home to more than forty local businesses. Agriculture, consumer services, and telecommunications (telephone, cablevision, long-distance, and Internet) represent the backbone of local economy. Local businesses include: Historic Hardware State Bank, providing financial services to the community for 110 years; Moultrie Independent Telephone Company, one of Illinois' oldest local telephone companies; and One-Eleven Internet Services, Inc., a full-service ISP offering local Internet access to thirty-four communities throughout Central Illinois. Corporate interests increasingly dominate agriculture in rural America. Yet, the family farm continues as the driving force of agricultural production in and around Lovington. |

Lovington's Community School District offers a preschool, grade school (K-8), and high school (9-12). The district's total enrollment is nearly 400 students. The Illinois Department of Education has projected that student enrollment will increase each of the next five years. Students can choose from many extracurricular activities. Available activities include sports, music, art, scholastic bowl, drama, and various clubs. Lovington Schools are committed to providing technology to enhance educational opportunities for all students. Visionary leadership, quality instruction, and community support have made Lovington Schools a leader in technology development among schools in Central Illinois. Ms. Suzie Foster, Technology Coordinator for Lovington Grade School, was honored in 1998 as a National Teacher of the Year. She received this honor for "demonstrated excellence in technology development for rural American schools." Lovington community events conducted through the year include an Antique Car Road Rally, the Annual Kiwanis Fish Fry, a spring clean-up day, a town-wide rummage sale, a fireworks display on the 4th of July, Junefest, and a Christmas lighting contest. Annual homecoming festivities include a parade, football game, and an alumni banquet and dance. The community conducts Junefest each June to announce the winners of the Community Hall of Fame and Citizen of the Year awards. |
